Tournament: | Finnish 2010 ECQ |
Date: | Friday July 23rd, 2010 |
Place: | Ropecon 2010 gaming convention, Dipoli, Espoo, Finland |
Players: | 93 |
As traditional, I ran a big VTES tournament at Ropecon this year. This year it was also the Finnish Qualifier for the European Championships in Paris (to be played in October).
Attendance was fantastic, we got a grand total of 93 players; I think that's the second-largest Ropecon VTES tournament ever. As usual most of the players were local – well, Finnish at least – but we had a nice mini-delegation of foreign players also attending: five Swedes, one Dane, and one guy from the States (via Hungary). Despite a brave attempt, this year's win didn't go to the Swedes, though it was close to going to that insidious “Ben” guy. Justice and the Finnish Way prevailed in the end, though. :)
We also had five totally new tournament players, which is always nice. Welcome, guys.
Besides attendance, I was very happy with how things went in general, too. We got started more or less on time, everyone who had pre-registered actually turned up, and many people helped out. Special thanks to Janne Lönnqvist, who helped with organizing prize support and also helped in setting up the tables before I got there.
Gamewise, it's hard to say much specific about this year; there were just so many games that forming a coherent picture was hard. I saw decks from all over the spectrum, from old-school G1/2 Malk bleed machines and Ventrue lawfirms to new-tech Laibon and Bloodlines decks. Quite a few decks went for a master-heavy style, often utilizing Cybele (and Otso's winning deck is also in this category). Villein was all over, and it was fun to see people start to use Sudden Reversal (instead of Wash) mainly to combat the endless cycles of Villein + something else. Ashur Tablets was quite popular, and as always, Dominate was a popular discipline… but that comes as no surprise.
This year's finalist decks were all bleedy/voty affairs, with lots of high-cap vampires (and Villeins :) in use. The final round was very interesting to watch; while some final rounds can stagnate into long bloat-filled affairs, here things kept happening all the time and for a while it was quite impossible to see who would win out. In the end, Otso's master card horror of a deck (which employs some very fun tech) won out – as Ben said after the tournament, his deck simply didn't have anything to reliably take it down (besides bleed like hell). It was fun to see Ben using a Kiasyd deck; he was staying over at our place and just the previous night we had sat on our patio and talked some VTES, and he noted that he wasn't sure if Kiasyds are quite tier1 due to lack of cross-table actions. We also talked about how silly-good Gremlins is. Well, tier1 or not, his Kiasyd affair (with lots of Gremlins) ended up being the next-to-last man standing in the final round.
Grats to all the finalists, and also to the other high-scorers. You did good.
I'd like to (again) thank all the players for keeping this a relaxed and sportsmanlike tournament, despite the size, and for having patience when things don't quite start up on time or there's some sort of mess somewhere. There is no way I could run a tournament of this size with argumentative or difficult players. So… thanks, guys. I'd also like to thank White Wolf and the Fantasiapelit game store for generous prize support; we had a full Anarchs factory set, a Sabbat War rare set, many boxes of boosters, and other stuff to give to the finalists… and of course, all the EC qualified players got a spiffy t-shirt. Everyone who attended also got a big pile of promos.
Was fun, see you next year (and/or in Paris).

The bolded players received EC qualification for 2010.
